Ms. Xiao-yum Li was the formal Director of Shanghai Ballet Theater and the Artistic Director of Shanghai Dance Troupe. She is also a First Class Choreographer conferred by the government of China. In 1961, Ms. Li graduated from the esteemed Beijing Dance School. In her 40 years of teaching experience, she has created many iconic ballet choreography’s. In 1987, she adopted a brand new performing style and choreographed “Golden Dance & Silver Ornament.” This performance notched up the level of Shanghai Dance Troupe and brought Ms. Li the “Highest Achievement in Art” award from the Shanghai municipal government. In 1997, Shanghai Ballet accompanied by Shanghai City Orchestra, premiered Ms Li’s ballet production “Butterfly Lovers.” The poignant delineation of the characters through ballet movement astounded the critics as well as the public.
Ms. Li joined Li’s Ballet when she immigrated to the United States as the Artistic Director. At 2008 Li’s Annual Showcase, the students debuted Ms. Li’s brand new choreography “The Dream of Red Chamber.” The choreography skillfully transformed one of the most famous Chinese novels of a love triangle into a heart wrenching ballet performance. In recent years,her work includes “Rose,” “Spring Rain,” “Straw Hat,” “Beauty Song,” “Little Mouse,” and “Rain”. She received gold medals in the Best Choreography category in the American Dance Award Competition (ADA) in 2009.
In 1997, Ms. Li together with her husband, the famous composer Dunnan Liu, was invited to create a large-scale ballet "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai" for the Shanghai Ballet Dance Troupe. In terms of music creation, the ballet showcases Mr. Liu Dunnan's original "New Romanticism" style of music creation, and in terms of dance, Ms. Li’s novel choreography that combines traditional ballet with modern dance and Chinese folk dance elements, bringing a new experience to the audience.
